Greetings!

Last week’s list on grading a hotel’s effectiveness on Facebook has been food for though and resulted in some good discussions in the Group Hotel Marketing Club on LinkedIn and some tweets on Twitter from listed hotels (Thank you Hotel Faro!).

On LinkedIn in essence the discussion was around the question how to measure effectiveness and making the case that the growth of reservations ought to be pivotal in this assesment, besides the growth of fans versus the number of content updates. I wholeheartedly agree to the first, although I had to base the league table on publically available info, whilst I advocate that with an integrated approach over various communication channels at the end traffic will converge into the web booking engine of the hotel website. In doing so, you create opportunity to capture Fans on the hotel website. Both Facebook and a hotel’s website are not mutually exclusive and when communicating consistently there must be a synergy and/or correlation. The latter meantioned measurement is a little tedious in needing to track posts on 50 pages ….  Let me have your thoughts on this subject too.

However, to the comments of this week’s eagerly awaited Top 50 of Algarve Hotels on Facebook.

  • Increase Fan base: The list saw the total fanbase increase by 2.328 fans or an average of 47. Again, most fans were added by Vila Galé (+540) and again more than the double of third ranked Lagrimas Hotels (+247) and then followed by Tivoli and surprisingly Prainha both with 150 new fans. The top 10 makes up for 57% of the Fan increase versus last week 54% Two hotels saw their number of Fans reduce; again for a third week in a row, Monica Isabel Beach Club (-17 fans) and Brown’s Vilamoura (-1 fan).

 

  • Market share: Only 6 hotels increased their relative market share with the largest increases for Prainha (+3,1%), Hotel Quinta do Lago (+2,3%) and Encosta do Lago (+2,1%). Aforementioned Monica Isabel Beach Club and Browns together with Monte da Quinta and Hotel Eva lost the most market share with at least 2,5%.

 

  • Ranking: Pestana (#25) overtook Vila Vita, (#27) Encosta do Lago overtook Monte Santo. Last week Pine Cliffs and Vale da Lapa had the same number of fans and this week they increased each their fanbase by 7, so tying this week at #42. The Algrave Casino Hotel overtook Rocamar Hotel handing it over the red lantern on the Top 50 with 496 fans.

 

  • Remark to the Poll: The Poll in the post of 21 November raised the question if e.g. Portobay Hotels, Lagrimas Hotels and Tivoli should be on the Top 50 of the Algarve, as they also have (several) hotels outside the Algarve. The results are still indecisive, currently 6 in favour of including and 5 votes wanting to exclude those and similar hotels. Keep on casting your vote!
